ABOUT

In 2023, a Pew Research Report indicated that Black journalists accounted for only 6% of the U.S. media workforce. Furthermore, Black authors publishing creative fiction, nonfiction and poetry with traditional publishing companies make up a small fraction of total publications, with reports suggesting only 5-7% of published authors are Black. The rise of AI in journalism also presents new concerns, as AI models can perpetuate existing biases and potentially limit opportunities further if not carefully implemented and reviewed. Black Writers for Peace and Social Justice, Inc. (BWPSJ) confronts the systemic erasure and marginalization of Black voices in media, literature, and public discourse. This crisis is exacerbated by political hostility toward press freedom, the underrepresentation of Black journalists and authors, and the rise of AI-driven content that risks replicating racial biases.

The current climate of aggressive suppression of dissent, including labeling media as "fake news" and dismantling trusted institutions while defunding public radio and television, has created a landscape where independent journalism and marginalized perspectives are increasingly silenced. With Black writers making up only 6% of the media workforce and a similarly small fraction of published authors, the narratives shaping public opinion remain overwhelmingly white-dominated. This lack of representation perpetuates harmful stereotypes. But most detrimental is how it obscures Black experiences, and weakens the collective ability to challenge injustice. BWPSJ intervenes by creating platforms, professional development, and safe spaces where Black writers can hone their craft, amplify their stories, and resist the forces that seek to suppress them.
